چکیده

Excluding a precise list of groups like alternating, symmetric, cyclic and dihedral, from 1st year algebra (§7.2.3), we expect there are only finitely many monodromy groups of primitive genus 0 covers. Denote this nearly proven genus 0 problem as Problem 2 . We call the exceptional groups 0-sporadic. Example: Finitely many Chevalley groups are 0-sporadic. A proven result: Among polynomial 0-sporadic groups, precisely three produce covers falling in nontrivial reduced families. Each (miraculously) defines one natural genus 0 Q cover of the j-line. The latest Nielsen class techniques apply to these dessins d’enfant to see their subtle arithmetic and interesting cusps. John Thompson earlier considered another genus 0 problem: To find θfunctions uniformizing certain genus 0 (near) modular curves. We call this Problem 1 . We pose uniformization problems for j-line covers in two cases. First: From the three 0-sporadic examples of Problem 2 . Second: From finite collections of genus 0 curves with aspects of Problem 1 .

Variables Separated Equations and Finite Simple Groups

[UMSt] www.math.uci.edu/ ̃mfried/paplist-cov/UMStory.html. Algebraic equations in separated variables: (*) f(x)−g(y) = 0. Defines a projective nonsingular algebraic curve Xf,g with two projections to the (Riemann sphere) z-line Pz = C ∪ {∞}: f : Px → Pz and g : Py → Pz. Two problems from the 60s (Davenport’s and Shinzel’s) solved by the monodromy method . I explain that and the associated Genus ...

Multiple Symmetric Positive Solutions of a Class of Boundary Value Problems for Higher Order Ordinary Differential Equations

In this paper, the authors consider the boundary value problem (E) x(t) + (−1)f(x(t)) = 0, 0 < t < 1, (B) x(0) = x(1) = 0, i = 0, 1, 2, · · · ,m− 1, and give sufficient conditions for the existence of any number of symmetric positive solutions of (E)–(B). The relationships between the results in this paper and some recent work by Henderson and Thompson (Proc. Amer. Math. Soc. 128 (2000), 2373–2...

Variables Separated Equations: Strikingly Different Roles for the Branch Cycle Lemma and the Finite Simple Group Classification

H. Davenport’s Problem asks: What can we expect of two polynomials, over Z, with the same ranges on almost all residue class fields? This stood out among many separated variable problems posed by Davenport, D.J. Lewis and A. Schinzel. By bounding the degrees, but expanding the maps and variables in Davenport’s Problem, Galois stratification enhanced the separated variable theme, solving an Ax a...

In Part I we introduced the notion of enhanced vertex operator superalgebra, and constructed an example which is self-dual, has rank 28, and whose full symmetry group is a seven-fold cover of the sporadic simple group of Rudvalis. In this article we construct a second enhanced vertex operator superalgebra whose full automorphism group is a cyclic cover of the Rudvalis group. This new example is...
